Composer, conductor and teacher
Michael's 75th birthday was on Sunday 11th January 2009. He conducted a very special concert on that day at the Bedford Corn Exchange, in aid of the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation.
The programme was Britten's Variations on a Theme of Purcell (Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra); Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No 2 and Elgar's Enigma Variations. In addition, a surprise rendition of 'Happy Birthday To You' was played and sung by all present.
The soloist is John Lill, who has a long association with Michael since performing with him in the Proms just after he won the Tchaikovsky Prize in 1970.
Photographs of the event are now available from Simon Richardson, our wonderful photographer.
